Beneath its heart-shaped, light-green skin lies snow-white, creamy flesh with an incredibly sweet flavor and a subtle, refreshing tang. Many liken the taste to a blend of mango, pineapple, vanilla, and banana. Plus, with very few seeds, you can enjoy almost the entire fruit.
The atemoya is a fascinating tropical fruit tree created by crossing the cherimoya (*Annona cherimola*) and the sugar apple (*Annona squamosa*). It combines the best qualities of both parents, rightfully earning its status as a highly sought-after tropical fruit. The 'Thompson' variety, originating in Brazil, is regarded by connoisseurs as one of the finest varieties available. It stands out not only for its exceptional flavor but also for its superior shelf life, making it a favorite among growers worldwide.
The plant develops into a small-to-medium-sized tree that can easily be kept compact through regular pruning. It is therefore ideally suited for growing in a large pot on a patio, in a greenhouse, or in a conservatory. It prefers a sunny location, high-quality, nutrient-rich, well-draining soil, and regular fertilization to support healthy growth and future yields. Unlike purely tropical *Annona* species, it is somewhat more cold-tolerant; however, it still requires a bright, frost-free overwintering period at temperatures around 10–12°C.
The fruit can weigh up to one kilogram and is considered a true delicacy worldwide. It is most often eaten fresh with a spoon but also works wonderfully in desserts, ice creams, creams, and fruit smoothies. Atemoya 'Thompson' Growing Instructions
Substrate:
Ideally slightly acidic and well-draining.
Recommended mix: 2 parts peat, 1 part perlite, a little sand.
Watering:
Keep the substrate consistently slightly moist.
Reduce watering in winter; empty any excess water from the saucer after watering.
Growing location:
Indoors year-round: As close to a window as possible, with plenty of light. It can be kept outdoors—on a terrace, in the garden, or on a balcony—only from spring to autumn: start in partial shade, then move to full sun.
Overwintering:
A tropical plant—it cannot tolerate temperatures below 5°C for extended periods. Overwinter at a minimum temperature of 10°C.
For the winter, place it in a living room, bedroom, hallway, conservatory, or heated greenhouse, always as close to a window as possible.
Fertilizing:
Use standard water-soluble or granular fertilizers.
Suitable fertilizer:
OSMOCOTE slow-release granular fertilizer.
