We offer larger, two-year-old saplings of this exceptionally rare jaboticaba; they are already well-established, giving them a significant head start over the young seedlings typically sold on the market.
*Plinia* sp. 'Giant Piray' originates from the Misiones province in Argentina, specifically the Piray Guazú River area. The mother tree was discovered near the town of Eldorado, and to this day, only one original specimen of this type is known to exist, estimated to be over 80 years old.
The standout feature of 'Giant Piray' is its exceptionally large fruit, which can reach a diameter of up to 4 cm, making it one of the largest known jaboticaba varieties. The flesh is very juicy, sweet, and aromatic, while the thicker skin has a pleasantly tart flavor and protects the fruit from damage. Thanks to the high flesh-to-skin ratio, the fruit is excellent for fresh eating.
A particularly interesting characteristic is its ability to bear fruit up to three times a year, with the first harvest occurring as early as late autumn—a time when most other jaboticaba species and fruit trees are not producing fruit.
Although it originates from a subtropical region, it shows good adaptability and some resilience to short-term temperature drops. However, like other jaboticabas, it is not frost-hardy; we recommend overwintering it in a well-lit area at temperatures above 10°C.
Plinia sp. 'Giant Piray' is a true collector's rarity. With its exceptional origins, massive fruit, and great future potential, it is a unique species that no enthusiast of exotic fruit plants should be without.
