Myrciaria guaquiea, also known as Guaquica or Ibá-cuíca, is a rare fruit species native to the coastal regions of the Brazilian state of Rio de Janeiro. In its homeland, it grows on sand dunes and is one of the little-known species of the genus Myrciaria, which are gaining increasing attention among collectors of exotic fruits.
The plant forms a densely branched shrub or small tree with attractive glossy leaves. Its compact growth and decorative appearance, as well as its tasty fruits, make it ideal for growing in pots
The fruits are round, approximately 2 cm in size, with a yellow, soft velvety skin. The pulp is juicy, sweet and very pleasantly aromatic. The taste is often compared to the well-known cable (Myrciaria glazioviana), but many growers rate it even better due to the higher proportion of pulp and smaller seeds. The fruits are excellent for direct consumption and represent a refreshing tropical delicacy.
A great advantage of this species is its willingness to bear fruit at a relatively young age. The experience of growers shows that it is a reliable and promising species with quality fruits, which deserves much more attention than it has received so far.
If you are looking for a rare Brazilian myrtle plant with tasty yellow fruits, attractive appearance and good fertility, Myrciaria guaquiea is among the most interesting and still little-known species that should not be missing from the collection of any exotic fruit lover.
