5 years old Plinia Oblongata: A rare tree from Brazil
Plinia Oblongata, known as jaboticaba "Sorrel, Azeda" is a rare tree from the Myrtaceae family, native to southeastern Brazil, specifically the Paranapanema River basin. Its young leaves have a reddish hue with fine hairs. It begins to bear fruit around ten years of age.
The fruits are round, smooth, up to 5 cm in size, with a sour taste reminiscent of Eugenia brasiliensis. These are the largest Jaboticaba fruits. They contain 1-4 seeds and are rich in vitamins and antioxidants. The tree tolerates long-term drought and short-term frosts down to -3 °C.
It requires acidic soil and partial shade for cultivation, especially when young. Due to its resistance, aesthetics and quality fruits, it is valued by both local communities and exotic fruit growers.
