Mulberry "Chicken Claw" - a collector's item with some of the sweetest fruits in the world
The Chicken Claw mulberry (Morus trilobata), also known as "Chicken Claw" or "Bird's Foot", is an extraordinary variety that has won the admiration of growers all over the world. At first glance, it attracts attention with its unusually shaped leaves resembling chicken claws - thanks to them, the plant looks very exotic and decorative even outside the fruiting season.
However, this variety is not only valued for its appearance. It produces beautiful elongated fruits of a dark red to almost black color, which hang from the branches like small jewels. The taste is exceptionally sweet, intense and rich - it is among the sweetest mulberries ever and its Brix value was measured to be exceptionally high.
The fruits are not only delicious, but also rich in vitamin A, vitamin E and carotenoids with antioxidant effects. Mulberries are traditionally valued for promoting vitality, healthy skin and protecting cells from aging.
Grafted plants start bearing fruit very early, often within the first year after planting. The plant forms a small to medium-sized tree suitable for gardens, larger containers and collector cultivation. It thrives best in a sunny location in permeable soil and, with proper care, is rewarded with a rich harvest of sweet fruits every year.
We have so far tested its winter hardiness when growing in a pot at temperatures around 0 °C, which the plant managed without any problems. We are still testing whether it can withstand more severe frosts.
