Gin berry (Glycosmis pentaphylla) is an exotic, evergreen shrub or small tree native to tropical Asia and northern Australia, where it grows in warm, humid climates. It belongs to the Rutaceae family – the same family as citrus – and as such, it boasts a delicate citrus scent and flavor of its small, translucent pink fruits. Often compared to berries, these small fruits have an exceptionally attractive appearance and a taste reminiscent of gin and tonic.
During flowering, sometimes in the second year after planting, the plant produces small, intensely fragrant white flowers, which later develop into shiny pink fruits with juicy, aromatic flesh. Their taste combines notes of citrus and herbs, and they are nicknamed "rum berries" for their distinctive, refreshing taste. They are consumed fresh or added to drinks and desserts, where they add a delicate, exotic touch.
The plant remains compact when grown in a container and is easy to shape. It grows to a height of 100 - 150 cm. It is undemanding to grow, requires a sunny to semi-shaded location and a permeable substrate. Tarsier plants surprisingly tolerate short-term drops in temperature down to 0 °C.
In addition to its ornamental and taste value, Gin berry also has a long tradition in natural medicine. In Southeast Asia, especially in Thailand, it has been used for centuries as a universal medicinal plant - for stomach problems, fever, jaundice, rheumatism or anemia. Local herbalists call it "the plant for everything mild" because it gently supports health without side effects.
Gin berry is a true botanical treasure - an ornamental, useful and uniquely tasty shrub that will bring a touch of the tropics and the scent of distant exotic gardens to your collection.
