Garcinia xanthochymus, known as false mangosteen or yellow mangosteen, comes from tropical Asia - from India through Indochina to southern China. It is an extremely attractive plant and still a relatively rare tropical fruit tree, which is a close relative of the true mangosteen (Garcinia mangostana), but its taste can even surpass it when fully ripe. The seedlings offered represent a unique opportunity to grow a truly exceptional species that is almost unknown in Europe.
When grown in a container, it grows significantly slowly and remains compact. This characteristic makes it an ideal portable plant for European conditions.
The fruits are spherical, approximately 7-10 cm in size, and when ripe, they turn from green to bright yellow to orange. Inside is a rich layer of juicy pulp with a balanced sweet and sour taste that is refreshing, intense and full of tropical aroma. From our own experience, we can say that the taste is among the top 5 tropical fruits that we have had the opportunity to taste - there is a really large amount of pulp and its sweet-sour harmony is exceptionally pleasant. The fruits are excellent for direct consumption and for further processing and contain a high proportion of vitamin C.
In European conditions, we recommend growing it exclusively as a portable plant in a pot. Thanks to its slower growth in a container, it does not require much space and, with good care, it begins to bear fruit after approximately 6 years.
Garcinia xanthochymus is not just a collector's rarity - it is a real tropical treasure that you can grow here too.
