Eugenia tenuipedunculata var. "Preta" – an exceptional rarity with black fruits and bright orange flesh

Eugenia tenuipedunculata var. "Preta" is an exceptionally rare and prized fruit plant originating from the Brazilian state of Santa Catarina, which is characterized by a subtropical climate with mild winters and warm summers. Thanks to its adaptability to fluctuating temperatures, including occasional frosts, this species is surprisingly hardy and suitable for cultivation even in milder European climates. An adult tree can withstand temperatures down to -5 °C, which is an unusually high frost resistance for a tropical Eugenia.

This beautiful and decorative tree grows to a height of 4 to 7 meters in the ground (up to 200 cm in a pot) and impresses at first sight with its long, slender leaves that resemble jaboticaba. Its overall appearance is very elegant and thanks to its dense foliage it is also an attractive solitaire for larger greenhouses, winter gardens or apartments. The first flowers appear approximately four years after planting.

The fruits of Eugenia tenuipedunculata are absolutely unique – they have a flattened or round shape, their skin is dark purple to black and contrasts with the bright orange flesh inside. The taste is delicate, sweet and surprisingly without any bitterness. There is also a yellow form...

Eugenia tenuipedunculata var. "Preta" is a true botanical pearl – it is extremely rare in cultivation outside of Brazil, and each plant represents not only a taste experience, but also a piece of the unique nature of South America. For collectors of rare species, it is an absolutely indispensable gem, which stands out for its resistance, beauty and exceptional fruits.
