Eugenia squamiflora – a rare pearl among exotic fruit trees

Eugenia squamiflora, known as Uvaia Brilhante or Uvaia de Joinville, is an extremely rare species of tropical fruit tree that comes from southern Brazil. It grows in nature in only a few places and appears in cultivation quite rarely. That is why it is extremely valued among collectors of exotic plants – not only for its uniqueness, but also for its exceptional taste and beautiful appearance.

This tree has a very fast growth rate – young plants can grow up to 30 cm in one year. When grown in the ground, it grows to a size of 3-4 meters, when grown in a pot, we keep it in a size of up to 150 cm and it is therefore an ideal plant for container cultivation. It easily adapts to conditions in a winter garden, greenhouse or on a protected terrace.

The fruits of Eugenia Squamiflora are among the most beautiful and tastiest of all species of the Eugenia genus. They are spherical, up to 4 cm in size, deep orange and have a juicy, sweet-sour pulp with a pleasant orange-citrus flavor. Their taste is distinctive, refreshing and reminiscent of the well-known uvaia (Eugenia pyriformis), but with softer and more aromatic notes.

The tree is also very decorative – shiny dark green leaves contrast with the lighter underside, the rough bark peels off attractively in lamellae and during flowering the entire crown is covered with rich white flowers.

Despite its exotic origin, it is quite hardy – it can withstand short-term drops in temperature down to 0 °C.

Eugenia squamiflora is a real rarity – one of those plants that only appear in the offer exceptionally. If you are looking for a beautiful, tasty and truly unique species for your collection, you have just found it.
