Eugenia speciosa – Laranjinha do Mato, Pitangão is a charming fruit tree native to the Atlantic Forest in Brazil. This species of the Eugenia genus is valued not only for its tasty fruits, but also for its elegant appearance, delicate flower scent and ease of cultivation.

Depending on the conditions, the plant grows from just one meter to a smaller tree. In our conditions, it can also be successfully grown in a pot, where it maintains a compact, dense growth and begins to bear fruit in the 3rd to 4th year. During flowering, it is covered with small white flowers with a distinctive, sweet scent.

The fruits appear from November to January and resemble small oranges – round, orange, with a slightly wrinkled skin. The taste is pleasantly sweet, refreshing, with a slight hint of citrus. They are consumed fresh, but are also excellent for making juices, jellies and marmalades.

Eugenia speciosa is a rustic and adaptable plant that tolerates most types of soil. It suits a sunny or semi-shady location, plenty of moisture and good drainage. It can be grown outdoors during the summer, during the winter it requires a bright place with a minimum temperature of around 10 °C.

The leaves and fruits contain a number of bioactive substances and the plant is used in traditional medicine to support digestion and for inflammatory conditions.

Eugenia speciosa is an ideal choice for anyone looking for an exotic, fruitful and yet undemanding plant that will delight with its beauty and taste. When fully ripe, it will reward you with deep orange fruits with a delicate, fruity aroma - a small piece of tropical forest right in your home.
