Although its name might remind you of the common pitanga (Eugenia uniflora), this is a completely different species native to the Brazilian Cerrado; it ranks among the most interesting—yet still uncommon—members of the Eugenia genus. We offer it in two distinct genetic lines: Classic and Compact.
The Compact form originates from a different source than the Classic form and is characterized by an even more compact, low, and slow-growing habit. It forms a dense, small shrub that is ideal for long-term cultivation in pots or greenhouses.
The species' greatest asset is its exceptional fruit. The fruit is incredibly juicy and sweet, boasting a rich tropical flavor completely free of the resinous aftertaste often found in the common Eugenia uniflora. Many growers consider it one of the most delicious fruits in the entire Eugenia genus.
Another unique feature is its very early onset of fruiting. In our experience, the first plants began to flower just two years after sowing—at a height of only around 20 cm—which is truly exceptional for the Eugenia genus. Under the right conditions, the first harvest can thus be obtained while the plant is still very young.
Unlike many other species native to the Brazilian Cerrado, this Eugenia proves to be surprisingly adaptable and easy to grow. It requires a sunny location and a highly permeable growing medium; it appreciates allowing the soil to dry out slightly between waterings.
The plant is not frost-hardy. It should be overwintered in a bright spot where temperatures do not drop below 10°C.
If you are looking for a truly exceptional species with a compact growth habit, early fruiting, and some of the tastiest fruit among Eugenia varieties, Eugenia pitanga do Cerrado will be a highlight of any exotic fruit plant collection.
