Eugenia florida – Guamirim / Pitanga Preta is a beautiful tropical shrub or small tree native to Brazil and Argentina, which combines an attractive appearance with tasty and healthy fruits. It grows to a height of 2 to 5 meters in the ground (in a pot about 120-150 cm) so it is an ideal candidate for growing in containers. The shrub forms a dense crown with shiny, evergreen leaves. During the flowering period (in our country from February to March), delicate white flowers appear in clusters at the ends of the branches. In our country, our plant first bears fruit in the third year after planting the seeds and is self-pollinating.
The fruits are round, black when ripe, sweet and juicy, taste like a mixture of blueberries and strawberries. They are suitable for direct consumption and for making jams and other homemade delicacies. Guamirim begins to bear fruit approximately 2 to 3 years after planting and is relatively undemanding to grow – it can withstand mild frosts down to -3 °C and grows well in permeable, nutrient-rich soil.
This rare Eugenie is an ideal choice for anyone who wants to add a healthy, undemanding, fast-fruiting and tasty tropical species to their collection.
