Syzygium paniculatum – Lilly Pilly
This elegant plant comes from the east coast of Australia, specifically from New South Wales. The plants are characterized by evergreen, compact growth and a beautiful appearance that attracts attention all year round.
The plant forms small, shiny, oblong-oval leaves. Young shoots have a bronze-red color, which later turns into dark green. In spring and summer, it blooms with richly fragrant white flowers. The fruits ripen about two to three months after flowering. They are approximately the size of a cherry, have crispy flesh and come in shades of pink, red to purple.
The fruits have a fresh, slightly spicy and sweet taste. They are most often consumed fresh, but they can also be processed into jams or compotes. It is a surprisingly hardy species that can regenerate from the roots under mild conditions even after partial freezing.
Syzygium paniculatum is a beautiful and useful plant that will bring color, fragrance and harvest even to less tropical conditions. It is an ideal choice for anyone looking for an exotic that can be grown without much effort in our country. It is also suitable as a bonsai.
