Psidium sartorianum, often referred to as Guayabillo, or Guarani, which means "Fruit that has eyes" in the tribal language (Tupi). It is also called Arañá-Tinga, Arañá-Jabuticaba or white Pitanga. It is a rare and attractive tropical fruit tree native to Mexico, Central America and parts of northern South America. This evergreen species is a close relative of the classic guava, but is characterized by smaller fruits and a significantly concentrated flavor that combines sweetness with fresh acidity and slightly spicy notes.
The fruits are small, usually green to light yellow when ripe, and despite their size, they offer a surprisingly intense flavor reminiscent of tropical guava. They are suitable for direct consumption, for making jams, jellies, juices or desserts. In traditional medicine, especially among Mayan cultures, the fruits and leaves were used to promote wound healing, for digestive problems, lung problems and to stabilize blood sugar levels.
Guayabillo is a very adaptable tree that thrives in warm tropical and subtropical climates. It tolerates full sun and partial shade, is relatively drought tolerant once established, and can grow in areas with calcareous soils as long as they are well drained. It is suitable for growing in warmer areas or as a portable plant in a container with frost-free wintering.
Psidium sartorianum is an ideal choice for lovers of non-traditional fruit species, tropical plant collectors, and growers looking for a hardy, lesser-known guava with exceptional flavor and an interesting botanical and cultural background. This species is not only a useful plant, but also a beautiful and valuable addition to any exotic collection.
