Psidium Arboretum guava - Araçá-Açú

Out of stock Preparing to spring 2026

This extremely rare guava is rarely found outside of Brazil. Its name Araçá-Açú comes from the Tupi Guarani language and means "large fruit with eyes," referring to the strongly persistent, ciliate-like sepals that give the fruit its unique appearance. The species is endemic to the Atlantic Rainforest of Rio de Janeiro state and the savannas and rocky plateaus of Minas Gerais, areas that are now among the most endangered ecosystems in all of Brazil.

The Araçá-Açú guava produces yellow to greenish spherical fruits measuring 4–8 cm - once as large as the fruits of the Psidium Cattleyanum as seen in the photo...The pulp is soft, creamy white, sweet and sour and its taste resembles a rare mixture of guava, pineapple and pear. The aroma is intense and intoxicating - even more aromatic than regular guava. In its homeland, it bears fruit early - already in the third to fourth year after planting.

Growing is easy and similar to classic guava. Araçá-Açú loves full sun, well-drained soil and regular watering in summer. During the winter, we recommend a protected location above 10 °C. It is resistant to pests and diseases, does not require complex care

The fruits can be eaten fresh, their distinctive aroma and tropical sweet-sourness are unforgettable.

Araçá-Açú is a rare treasure from Brazil, which appears only exceptionally outside its homeland. It is a plant with a story, with the scent of the wild rainforest and with a genetic heritage that could disappear irretrievably without growers. If you want to bring a piece of truly rare nature to your home, winter garden, greenhouse or collection, you have just found it.
