Meet one of the rarest jaboticabas in the world – Plinia callosa, an endemic species hidden deep in the Bahian Atlantic Forest. A species so limited that it is found in nature in only one place and is owned by only a handful of enthusiasts outside of Brazil.
This Plinia commands respect at first sight – not only for its beauty, but also for its fascinating way of growing.
On its trunk, calluses – thickenings – form, from which flowers and fruits directly grow. This is a phenomenon that you will not see in almost any other species.
When ripe, it reveals large round fruits up to 5-10 cm in size, whose color turns into a soft yellow-green. Inside is a soft, sweet pulp that reminds tropical fruit collectors of a combination of the well-known jaboticabas – but softer and fuller.
Plinia callosa grows to medium size and has a majestic appearance with its long, elliptical, finely hairy leaves. It is botanically close to the Plinia rara species – and like it, it is among the absolute rarest of the genus.
Although it comes from a lush rainforest, it is surprisingly adaptable. It only needs wintering at around 15 °C and regular care. It will reward you not only with growth, but with the feeling that you own something that no one else in your area will have.
