A miracle from Southeast Asia with the magic of aroma, color and healing power
Curcuma longa, known as long turmeric, is a plant that the whole world knows - whether thanks to the golden curry spice, or for its beautiful flowers resembling exotic tulips. It comes from Southeast Asia, where it has been cultivated for centuries as a medicinal, ornamental and useful plant.
Its jointed rhizomes are used to obtain the famous spice turmeric - the basis of many Asian dishes and traditional Ayurvedic medicine. Curcumin, its active ingredient, is valued for its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and regenerative effects. Turmeric also acts as a natural plant pesticide, making it a natural protector of your home jungle.
In addition to its medicinal properties, it can also enchant. It is popular for its pink-purple or white flowers that resemble tulips. The plant grows to a height of 40–90 cm, has rich green leaves and a dense spike of flowers – a real decoration of a window sill or winter garden.
Turmeric loves warmth, light and humidity. It does best on an east or south window with regular watering, misting and occasional fertilizing. In summer, you can grow it in a shaded place, where it will appreciate fresh air and humidity. As soon as the temperatures drop below 15 °C, the plant goes to rest
This period is ideal for harvesting rhizomes...
Harvesting and further steps
Timing: The best time to harvest is in the fall, when the plant has finished flowering and its leaves are starting to dry out.
Remove the tubers: Carefully remove the plant from the pot or soil so as not to damage the rhizomes.
Clean: Shake off excess soil from the tubers and remove any roots.
Divide: If the tubers are large enough, divide them into several parts. You can keep one part for cooking and use the other part for further cultivation.
Processing: You can boil, dry and grind the harvested rhizomes into powder.
Curcuma longa is an ideal choice for anyone who wants to grow a plant at home that will delight all the senses - fragrant, medicinal and ornamental at the same time.
