Psidium longipetiolatum, also known as Araçá Serrano, is a rare guava that grows on the picturesque slopes of the Atlantic Forest in southern Brazil. It is one of the lesser-known guava species, but it stands out for its resistance, beautiful appearance and delicious fruits, which are quickly gaining popularity among growers and gourmets around the world.
The tree forms a dense, rounded crown. The smooth cylindrical trunk is covered with reddish-yellow bark that peels off annually. The leaves are firm, simple, obovate.
The fruits are round, purple-red, 2.5–4 cm in size. Under the peel is a white, juicy pulp with a refreshing acidity and a delicate sweetness reminiscent of citrus. The fruit is excellent for direct consumption and is traditionally used to make jellies, jams, juices and other sweets. It bears fruit after about three years and the harvest period is from January to March.
Psidium longipetiolatum is undemanding and very adaptable. It can withstand a dry period lasting 5–6 months, short-term waterlogging and poorer soil. It thrives best in a well-drained, slightly acidic substrate. Its frost resistance is also interesting - it can withstand short-term drops in temperature down to -4 °C.
Araçá Serrano is a unique species that combines beauty, resistance and culinary value. It is an ideal addition to collections of tropical and subtropical plants and at the same time an attractive fruit rarity that every lover of exotics will appreciate.
