Hardy jaboticaba from the Argentine border
The Corrientes jaboticaba is a rare and unique variety originating from the province of Corrientes in northern Argentina, which borders Brazil and Paraguay. Although this area has a subtropical climate, it regularly experiences frost. It is thanks to this natural adaptation that Corrientes is an ideal variety for temperate and subtropical areas with colder winters. The fruits are medium-sized, with a diameter of 1.5 to 2.5 cm, have a thicker skin with a pronounced burgundy color, and their taste is sweet and sour, reminiscent of a mixture of strawberries and grapes. The pulp is juicy, but slightly less fleshy than other varieties. The variety is excellent for direct consumption, but also for making juices, jams or homemade ice cream.
The tree grows to a height of 2 to 4 meters in the ground (in pots it is just over 100 cm) and has small, shiny leaves that easily withstand high humidity and weather fluctuations. Thanks to its compact growth, it is also suitable for growing in containers. It requires well-drained soil with an acidic pH and will appreciate partial shade and regular watering. In the first years, it is advisable to winterize the tree at temperatures above 10 °C, but as it grows older, it can be gradually hardened. The frost resistance of this variety is above average - it can handle short-term drops in temperature down to -2 °C, which makes it one of the most resistant jaboticabas.

Corrientes Jaboticaba represents the ideal combination of exotic flavor and resistance to cold. If you are looking for a less demanding tropical plant with the potential for outdoor cultivation in a milder climate, you have just found it.
