Eugenia macrobracteolata, also known as Pitanga-Juba, is an extremely rare and attractive species of eugenia native to Brazil, where it grows in the semi-deciduous and coastal forests of the states of São Paulo, Paraná, Espírito Santo and Rio de Janeiro. This fast-growing shrub or small tree is valued not only for its delicious fruits, but also for its elegant appearance, abundant flowering and ease of cultivation.

The name "Pitanga-Juba" comes from the Tupi language and refers to the delicate, thin yellow skin of the fruits. The plant forms a dense ovoid crown with olive-green leaves and light brown, finely cracked bark. The large, heart-shaped bracts on the flowers are also very decorative, by which this species can be easily recognized.

The fruits are round to slightly elongated drupes measuring 2–3.5 cm with soft, juicy orange flesh. The taste is exceptional – reminiscent of a combination of sweet pitanga, cherries and oranges. When fully ripe, the fruits acquire a distinct citrus aroma reminiscent of Fanta lemonade, which is why this species is sometimes referred to as "Pitanga-Fanta". The fruits have the best taste when they fall to the ground and are fully ripe.

The plant grows relatively quickly and, under good conditions, can start bearing fruit 2 to 3 years after planting. Eugenia macrobracteolata prefers a sunny location and a well-drained substrate rich in organic matter. A mixture of red soil, sand and good quality compost with good drainage is ideal. The plant tolerates sandy soils and short-term drought well.

This species is surprisingly hardy and can withstand short-term drops in temperature down to around -3 °C. However, for long-term cultivation in our conditions, wintering at temperatures above 10 °C is ideal.
