Although the name might remind you of the common pitanga (Eugenia uniflora), this is a completely different species native to the Brazilian Cerrado; it ranks among the most interesting—yet still relatively rare—members of the Eugenia genus. We offer it in two distinct genetic lines: Classic and Compact.
The "Classic" form comes from a specific source and exhibits a more natural, slightly larger, and more robust growth habit than the compact variant. It develops into a stronger shrub with a more pronounced structure, making it ideal for growers who prefer a vigorous plant with greater growth potential. While the two forms differ in their growth habit, their fruits are virtually identical in taste.
The species' greatest asset is its exceptional fruit. The fruit is incredibly juicy and sweet, boasting a rich tropical flavor completely free of the resinous aftertaste often found in the common pitanga. Many growers consider it one of the most delicious fruits in the entire Eugenia genus.
Another unique feature is its very early onset of fruiting. In our nursery, the first plants began to flower just two years after sowing—at a height of only around 20 cm—which is truly remarkable for this species. Under the right conditions, the first harvest can thus be obtained while the plant is still very young.
Unlike many other species from the Brazilian Cerrado, this Eugenia proves to be surprisingly adaptable and easy to grow. It requires a sunny location and a highly permeable growing medium, and it appreciates allowing the soil to dry out slightly between waterings.
The plant is not frost-hardy. It should overwinter in a bright location at temperatures that do not drop below 10°C.
If you are looking for an exceptional variety with robust growth, very early fruiting, and some of the tastiest fruit among the Eugenia species, Eugenia pitanga 'do Cerrado – Classic' will be a magnificent and valuable addition to any collection of exotic fruit plants.
