Campomanesia xanthocarpa, known as guabiroba orange, or guabirova, is an attractive semi-deciduous tree native to Brazil. It grows in tropical and subtropical regions and is valued not only for its beauty, but also for its tasty fruits, which are eaten fresh or processed into juices, ice cream, jellies, liqueurs and teas.
The first fruits appear 3 to 4 years after sowing, with a plant size of around 70 cm. Campomanesia xanthocarpa is self-pollinating, so it does not require pollinators.
The fruits are round to slightly oval, when ripe they are deep yellow to orange in color and about 3 cm in diameter. The flesh is firm, juicy, sweet with a pleasant acidity, reminiscent of a combination of citrus and tropical fruit. They have a thin, smooth skin and a soft, flat seed that is not a problem when consumed.
Guabiroba orange is easy to grow. It requires a sunny location with at least six hours of direct sun per day. It prefers slightly moist soil, and does not tolerate waterlogging or prolonged drought.
Guabiroba fruits are not only tasty, but also nutritious. They contain high amounts of vitamin C, B vitamins, fiber, natural sugars, iron, calcium, potassium, phosphorus, magnesium and strong antioxidants. In folk medicine, the leaves are mainly used to treat inflammatory and urinary diseases, high cholesterol and obesity. The fruit helps to strengthen immunity, protect cells, bone health, improve digestion and overall regeneration of the body.
Once the guabiroba ripens and you taste its fruits, it is difficult to resist it. One of the growers wrote about it: "It turned out that I love them and they deserved a place in the jungle. The fruits fall to the ground, you just have to pick them up and put them in your mouth for a nice explosion of flavor."
