Annona glabra – Alligator Apple from Swamps
A tropical shrub or small tree native to Florida, the Caribbean, Central and South America and West Africa, which stands out for its incredible resistance. It tolerates drought, flooding and salt water, making it not only a sought-after rootstock for other annons, but also a valuable plant for demanding conditions.
The flesh of the ripe fruit, unlike most other annons, is orange-yellow in color and has a sweet aroma. It belongs to the less pronounced annons in terms of taste, but still has its place in tropical collections due to its medicinal reputation, as the best rootstock for other annons and also as food for crocodiles and turtles.
Various parts of the plant are used in traditional medicine. The juice from the fruit is considered a supportive agent for rheumatism, the bark contains triterpenes with anti-inflammatory effects and the seeds are being investigated for their content of anti-tumor compounds and the possibility of producing ethanol.
Annona Glabra flowers repeatedly and begins to bear fruit in the second or third year. Young trees can be covered with flowers and fruits at the same time for a certain period of time.
Annona glabra is an exceptionally hardy plant, well adapted to wind and heat, which will find a place in any tropical or subtropical garden. Its unconventional appearance, natural vitality and natural tenacity make it an interesting addition even for growers in more demanding conditions.
