The chestnut tree 'Ville de Lyon' is a reliable French variety of chestnut tree, which stands out for its very early onset of fruiting, usually 2-3 years after planting. The tree grows to a height of only about 4 meters and has a compact growth. The fruits are very large, which makes this variety a popular choice for both small gardeners and large-scale growers.
It is a self-pollinating monoecious plant - on one tree we find both male and female flowers. So only one tree is enough for fruiting. However, for 100% pollination it is better to have two trees. The second can be any seedling, it is enough to be grown within a distance of 1 km. If you grow one tree, not all the fruits will be fertilized, some will be empty.
The flowers bloom in June and are creamy white. They are pollinated by wind and insects. The fruits ripen in July and are enclosed in a thorny shell, inside which are hidden one to three shiny brown chestnuts.
The chestnut tree thrives best in a sunny location, in light, sandy, well-drained soils rich in humus. It prefers neutral to slightly acidic soils. After planting, it tolerates prolonged periods of drought well. The leaves are oblong, deep green and turn yellow in autumn.
This undemanding and hardy variety is also suitable for growing at higher altitudes, up to approximately 500 m above sea level. Thanks to its properties, it is an ideal choice for anyone who desires tasty home-grown chestnuts straight from the garden.
