A sweet tropical wonder with the taste of egg custard and the softness of butter
Canistel, also known as eggfruit or yellow sapota, is a true treasure of the tropics. This evergreen tree comes from the region of southern Mexico, Belize and Guatemala, where it has been cultivated for centuries for its extraordinary fruits. Today it can also be found in other parts of the world - from Costa Rica and Brazil to Thailand, Sri Lanka and Australia.
At first glance, canistel fruits are striking with their bright yellow to orange color and velvety smooth skin. Inside is a pulp of extraordinary consistency - soft, creamy, with a texture reminiscent of hard-boiled egg yolk. The taste is rich, sweet, with notes of vanilla pudding, caramel and sweet potatoes. That is why it is called "cupcake fruit" - it tastes like a dessert straight from the tree.
Canistel grows up to 10 meters in height, but in a pot or greenhouse it can also be grown as a smaller, compact tree up to 200 cm. It loves warmth, sun and well-drained, nutritious substrate. In our conditions it is grown similarly to mango or sapota - during the summer it thrives outdoors in a protected place, in the winter it can be moved to a bright, frost-free room.
Ripe fruits are eaten fresh or used in the kitchen - in smoothies, milkshakes, desserts, jams or ice cream. Its creamy texture makes it an ideal ingredient for natural "pudding fruit" or tropical creams.
Canistel is a close relative of the popular lucuma or mamey sapota and shares the same exceptional qualities with them – a combination of beauty, taste and exotic rarity. If you are looking for something truly extraordinary, canistel is a tropical gem that will delight not only the taste buds, but also the eye of every exotic lover.
In our country, the plant first bloomed at 3 years old...
